The potential of the Waitaki Valley was discovered in the late 90’s. The North facing limestone rich hills were identified as possible prime sites for the cool climate Pinot Noir. The first Pinot Noir was produced in 2003 and since then Pinot Noir from this area has won several gold medals around the world. Coolness has been the key to the elegant style of wines coming out of the Waitaki Valley, it has also proved it can produce outstanding aromatics and Chardonnay. However this is not a region of high yielding crops – quite the contrary, its climate can result in some of the lowest yielding crops in the country, hence the regions wines cost considerably more to produce.
In these wines there are real glimpses of something special from the limestone terroir. The region will always be a boutique producer and its wines will be enjoyed by discerning wine lovers.
